Environment friendly living, or sustainability, comprises of lowering wastage and utilising every resource to its full capacity. From renewables to saving energy and consuming a plant-based diet to prohibiting single use plastics, every sustainable effort is a step in the direction of creating a healthier future for the coming generations.

Here is how you can contribute towards a cleaner and safer environment by making a few mindful choices, right at home.

1.Unplug.

Switch off and unplug all devices/appliances which are not in use. Lowering energy consumption makes a significant impact on the carbon footprint of an individual.

2.Save water.

A dripping tap can waste up to 1 litre of water per hour. Repair or replace every leaking tap or pipe without any delay. An RO purifier wastes around 3 litres of water for every 1 litre water it purifies. Try to collect the discarded water and use it for other purposes around the house like washing clothes/utensils, watering plants, or mopping and cleaning.

3.Switch to renewables.

Replace plastic bags with cloth/paper bags. Use a steel straw instead of plastic ones. Try to cut down the use of single use plastics. The new pollutant in today’s scenario are surgical masks. Buy locally made and washable cloth masks instead of single-use ones.

4.Cut down the consumption of meat.

According to PETA, producing a pound of meat requires 2400 gallons of water as compared to 25 gallons of water required to produce a pound of wheat. Make a sustainable choice with food. A plant-based diet, nonetheless, is always better for your body, as it reduces biological magnification, thereby increasing nutrient absorption in the body.

5.Make use of public transport and carpooling.

Instead of using one vehicle for everyone, try making use of public transport, cycles or carpooling with others. While we do that, we reduce carbon emissions and also save money!

6.Plant trees.

Plants can be used as home décor and air purifiers at the same time! Planting more trees outside makes a huge difference in increasing the oxygen production and reducing carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the atmosphere in the long run. Aim to plant at least 10 trees per year as your contribution towards a healthier planet.

Lastly, always be conscious of the choices you make. Every step counts! Make sure to educate children the importance of leading an environmentally friendly life. What we practice and teach will shape the future of our children and ultimately make the earth a better place to live in.
