Experiments show that being exposed to violence in video games, television shows, and movies are linked with aggressive behavior in kids. It is true that the content we are exposed to cannot be labeled as entirely “good” or “bad” but the kids cannot judge this for themselves. That is why parents should be mindful of what kind of content their kids are exposed to.

Few would deny the importance of tackling online hatred or child abuse content. The internet, after all, has become a key weapon for those who disseminate and incite hatred and violence against minorities, and for those who pose a horrifying threat to children. — Owen Jones

The content on the screen should not put our children in danger. So here are ways to handle the situation and protect our children from the danger that the onscreen violence may perpetuate:

  • Know what type of content your children are exposed to.
  • Don’t allow access to violent content.
  • Restrict time spent on devices. If you stop your kid from getting access to mobile phones or other electronic gadgets altogether, they may find this move unjust. They may feel that you are punishing them for no reason. They may start comparing themselves with other friends.
  • Look out for healthier and helpful alternate options available in the market. You may buy video games, books that are helpful and provide positive role models to your children.
  • Use child lock to block out programs containing hostile and age-inappropriate content.
  • Explain your “NO”.Make sure to explain to your children why violent games and TV series are harmful. Instead, you can encourage them to watch innovative, educational content which will impact them positively.
  • Talk with other parents and ask for their support and cooperation to restrict children’s exposure to aggressive content. When your child visits his/her friend's house inform the parents that your child is not allowed to watch hostile and age-inappropriate content.
  • Create a tribe of parents to explore new ideas and activities that support children’s mental and physical growth. Plan for fun trips close to nature, small treks. Try to engage children in some outdoor sports activities and help them to learn a new art.
  • Demonstrate and teach the children values such as compassion, non-violence, and honesty.
  • Don’t fail to appreciate when children follow through and pay heed to your concerns.
