Wellness at the Workplace

Good mental and physical health are important for all of us to stay productive and have a comfortable living. Staying in shape, eating healthy, good mental wellbeing and content relationships are a few prerequisites to a holistic and stress-free life. However, addressing the issues is as important as being aware of what is to be done, in general for maintaining stability.

One of the main causes of stress is related to work or career. The constant need to do our best and achieve targets, being appreciated, growing professionally, both in our career and capabilities, and facing the ruthless competition every day, put immense pressure on our mind and body. There is a dire need to control the body’s stress response to ensure physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

The only way we can have any sort of control over this stress is through working on ourselves. Ensuring a healthy lifestyle, with more focus towards psychological wellbeing significantly promotes better concentration and productivity.

So how do we try? Where do we start?

  1. Lifestyle Changes: The first step will always be a healthy lifestyle. Poor nutrition, lack of exercise, improper posture and lack of sleep have shown to negatively impact the health and cause lethargy. A lot of lifestyle disorders like PCOS, diabetes, and high cholesterol can be prevented just be being slightly more mindful of eating habits.
  2. Spiritual Wellbeing: Practicing mindfulness through meditation and yoga has shown to reduce stress levels and increase the production of endorphins. This induces a feeling of calm and general contentment. Yoga has also proven to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and, production of cortisol (the stress hormone) caused due to stressors at work.
  3. Healthy Relationships: Good relationships at the workplace, with employers and fellow employees significantly impacts the overall atmosphere of the workplace. A more empathetic approach leads to better adjustment, higher morale, good interpersonal relationships, better teamwork, and mutual respect, and subsequently, better productivity, with an added advantage of lower stress levels.
  4. Mental Wellbeing: Brain health also forms an important part of overall wellbeing. This helps in keeping the cognitive capacity intact. An antioxidant and protein rich diet helps improving concentration, memory, and gives a better attention span.
